I - Introduction

A. Purpose - To provide a comprehensive understanding of the College Station Independent School District (CSISD) Counseling and Guidance Program in accordance with state policies including awareness of services provided at each educational level; credentials required of professional school counselors; and standards of ethics practiced.

B. Mission and Goal - The Counseling and Guidance personnel work in conjunction with other school and community professionals to promote the success of all students through support of the College Station ISD Mission statement and board priorities.

III - Focus of CSISD Counseling and Guidance Programs

A. Elementary (PK – 4 th grade) - Elementary Counselors focus on supporting children as they begin their educational career and help prepare them for future success.

-- Develop basic skills needed to succeed in everyday life. -- Address academic and personal student concerns through prevention and intervention. -- Support parents and school personnel in helping every child achieve his or her individual potential.

B. Intermediate (5th and 6th Grades) - Intermediate Counselors focus on helping students transition from childhood to adolescence.

-- Teach pro-social skills to provide students the tools needed to deal with both positive and negative peer relationships. -- Aid students in making academic choices which will affect their middle school, high school and post high school/college years. -- Foster academic development by helping students increase organizational and study skills and by introducing higher order thinking skills. -- Immerse students in diversity awareness and appreciation.

C. Middle School (7th and 8th Grades) - Middle School Counselors focus on transitioning and preparing students for the challenges of high school.

-- Help students become more aware of career opportunities and how these may fit into their future plans. -- Assist individual students in understanding 9 th Grade course requirements and four-year school plans. -- Assist students in developing interpersonal skills and self confidence. -- Assist students in developing their individual academic potential.

D. High School (9th – 12th Grades) - High School Counselors focus on helping students meet requirements for graduation, plan for post high school education/training, and develop into productive young adults.

-- Provide academic guidance and course planning. -- Counsel with individuals and groups as well as consult with parents, teachers, and other staff to address students’ needs. -- Plan and transition for post-graduation. -- Support of state-mandated assessment programs as well as assessments related to college entrance and placement. -- Support all areas of the high school guidance plan.
