AMCHS FCCLA students advance to nationals

A&M Consolidated High School seniors Kara Slaughter and Samantha Shepherd won first place in the Life-Planning event at the recent state Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competition in Dallas.

Slaughter and Shepherd will advance to the national competition and leadership conference this summer in Orlando, Fla.

The championship presentation featured a budget, an example centerpiece, and a overall plan, centered around a charity event supporting breast cancer.  The presentation was selected champion out of 30 teams, all who qualified for the state event at previous contests.

Other AMCHS participants placed at the state competition:
  • Jonathan Bradford, Nicole Gunnels and Kristen Bettiol:  Third Place, Food Innovations
  • Megan James and Danielle Reinecke:  Fifth Place, Interior Design
  • Jenna Elsik:  Fourth Place, Fashion Design
  • Nicole Albrecht:  Fourth Place, Fashion Construction
  • Macey Lively:  Fifth Place, Recycle & Redesign

In addition, several AMCHS students took Leadership Enhancement Opportunity (LEO) exams and were awarded medals based on the level of their score on the exam:
  • Cesia Sanchez:  Gold Medal, Interior Design
  • Jaiden Harrison:  Gold Medal, Culinary
  • Grace Wong:  Gold Medal, Culinary
  • Shirin Nayani:  Gold Medal, Child Development
  • Arena Ali:  Silver Medal, Child Development
  • Abby Hedge:  Silver Medal, Child Development

FCCLA advisors Monica Smith, Kayle Poe and Erin Stutts attended the conference with the students.
