AMCHS newspaper, staff earn awards

A&M Consolidated High School’s newspaper, The Roar, was recently awarded the Silver Star from the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC), placing the newspaper in the top five percent of scholastic newspapers in Texas.

The Roar was one of only 28 high school newspapers statewide to be recognized with a Star Award from ILPC, which is an affiliate of the University Interscholastic League, and is one of the nation’s largest state high school associations of student newspapers and yearbooks.

Additionally, members the staff received individual awards from the ILPC.

The judges selected the following state winners in each category for class 5A large schools:
  • Kate Williams, senior editor – second place, feature/entertainment page design
  • Amy Zhang, editor-in-chief – honorable mention, page one design
  • Laura Everett, photography editor – honorable mention, sports action story
  • Dana Branham, features editor – honorable mention, portrait photograph

Members of The Roar newspaper staff include Amy Zhang, editor-in-chief; Alina Dattagupta, managing editor; Kate Williams, senior editor; Kendra Spaw, executive editor; Elena Edwards, opinions editor; Rachel Kagle, sports editor; Abigayle English, news editor; Laura Everett, photography editor; Dana Branham, features editor; Isabel Drukker, assistant opinions editor, assistant opinions editor; Kimmie Cessna, assistant news editor; Kelsey Gaines; assistant editors Anne Finch, Devin Dakota, Janet Ni, Leah Crisman, Nicole Farrell, Michelle Liu, and Shilpa Saravanan; and Joy Cope and Maurice Vellas, graphic artists. The newspaper is advised by Courtney Wellmann and assistant advisor Mike Williams.

Newspapers from throughout Texas were sent to ILPC for critique and judging.  The judges rated the newspaper and nominated the top papers in the state for Star Awards.

The staff also received the Award of Distinguished Merit for excellent work in the areas of coverage, writing and editing, design, visuals, reader services and general impressions.

“This year’s newspapers were very impressive,” ILPC Director Jeanne Acton said. “The writing was outstanding. Texas clearly has some of the best scholastic journalism in the nation.”

The award was presented during the 84th annual ILPC state convention, April 27-29 at the University of Texas at Austin.
