AMCHS HOSA students advance to nationals

A&M Consolidated High School students Lisa Hsiao and Rebecca Stark advanced the national Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) contest via top performances at the recent state competition.

Hsiao qualified with high marks in the state Healthcare Issues Exam, while Stark advanced to nationals for the Barbara James Service Award.

Stark completed 36 hours of community service at the Memorial Community Health Center in Aurora, Neb., where she assisted patients with activities of daily living, transport and general patient care duties in Aurora, Neb.  She also volunteered 18 hours as a staff member of the George Bush Library Youth Discovery Camp.  To qualify in this event, students must complete and document at least 50 hours of community service and be in good standing with HOSA.

Stark also finished seventh in the researched persuasive speaking contest, but did not advance to nationals in that respective category.

A third AMCHS competitor at the state contest, Austin Beltrand, competed in the prepared speaking contest.

The national HOSA conference will be held in Orlando, Fla., in June.

HOSA is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
