November CSISD Board Workshop/Meeting Recap

Note:  This is an overview of some of the agenda items on the November board workshop and meeting.  This recap does not include every item on the agendas.  Official meeting minutes will be made available on following approval at the December board meeting.

COLLEGE STATION , Texas – The College Station ISD Board of Trustees met Monday, November 19.  The following discussions and actions are of note.

CSISD Long-Range Planning:  CSISD’s current enrollment is 11,172 and, historically, has grown at a rate of approximately three percent annually.  With CSISD’s eight elementary schools at a combined 93 percent capacity, it is projected a ninth elementary school could be needed as soon as the 2015-16 school year.  Additionally, based on these projections, three additional campuses could be needed by the end of the decade: a third intermediate, a third middle school and a 10th elementary.

With this in mind, the board charged the district to form a community-based committee to examine the potential needs of the district.  The committee will consists of parents, CSISD staff, community members, business owners and will be representative of CSISD’s demographics.

The committee is expected to begin meeting in the spring.

Legislative Action Plan:  Led by Dr. Eddie Coulson, the board discussed items that should be included on the district’s legislative action plan for the 83rd Legislative session, which begins on January 8, 2013.  The legislative action plan will include the following topics:
  • Flexibility in graduation plans
  • Simplification of the accountability system
  • A reduction in the amount of state assessment
  • Restoring school finance to the level prior to 82nd legislature
  • School choice/vouchers
  • High-Performing Schools Consortium

2012-13 CSISD Calendar:  The board accepted the District Education Improvement Council’s (DEIC) recommendation to present two options for the 2013-14 CSISD calendars to the public for voting and feedback.  Beginning after the Thanksgiving break and lasting through January 1, parents, students and the general public can vote on which of the two calendar options they prefer and have the opportunity to provide open-ended feedback.  The board will be presented the results of the voting and feedback, prior to making the decision on the calendar option at the January board meeting.

Members sworn in:  Paul Dorsett, Place 1, and Carol Barrett, Place 2, were officially sworn in for a three-year term on the CSISD Board of Trustees.  Both incumbents, Dorsett and Barrett ran unopposed in the November election.

Highly-Qualified Report:  The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires that all teachers of core content areas be highly qualified and that the district publicly report the findings annually.  Deputy Superintendent for Human Resources and Business Glynn Walker reported 100% of CSISD teachers are highly-qualified for the 2012-13 school year.

Purchases:  The board approved the purchase of the Leveled Literacy Intervention System from Heinemann for the amount on $77,000.

Board Reorganization:  The board unanimously voted to keep the same executive committee as last year.  The executive committee will be as follows
  • President:  Valerie Jochen
  • VIce-President:  Paul Dorsett
  • Secretary:  Jeff Harris
