13 Consol students qualify for UIL academic state meet

Individuals advancing to state:

  • Michelle Liu - 1st Place Literary Criticism

  • Karna Venkatraj - 1st Place Informative Speaking

  • Brooke Versaw - 1st Place Spelling

    Dana Branham - 3rd Place Journalism

  • Shilpa Saravanan - 3rd Place Editorial Writing

  • Kensen Shi - 3rd Place Science

In addition, three teams advanced to the state competition:  

  • Literary Criticism - 1st Place - Michelle Liu, Lisa Liu and Rachel Scott

  • Spelling - 1st Place - Brooke Versaw, Shilpa Saravanan, Shreya Shankar and Samantha Wang

  • Current Issues team - 2nd Place - Alex Coopersmith, Shankar Srinivasan, Shilpa Saravanan, and Annie Zhang (This team had the highest second-place score of all the regionals in the state, and will advance as the wild card team.)

Additionally, several other students placed in their events, earning points toward Consol’s second place team finish:

  • Alex Coopersmith - 4th Place Current Issues (alternate to State)

  • Patrick Lynch - 4th Place Informative Speaking (alternate to State)

  • Rachel Scott - 5th Place Literary Criticism

  • Kensen Shi - 5th Place Mathematics

  • Jiatao Liang - 6th Place Mathematics

AMCHS Academic UIL coaches are Jamie Bassett (Math), Terri Casto (Spelling), Yvette Mora (Science), Roy Rodriguez (Speech and Current Issues), Jackie Shoemake (Literary Criticism) and Mike Williams (Journalism).
