CSISD high school newspapers, staffers earn state-level awards

The accolades place both newspapers in the top five percent of scholastic newspapers in Texas, as only 22 high school newspapers statewide were recognized with a Star Award.

 

The Roar and The Catamount staffs also received the Award of Distinguished Merit for excellent work in the areas of coverage, writing and editing, design, visuals, reader services and general impressions.


The Roar’s online site, theroarnews.com, was awarded the Award of Distinguished Merit. It is the news site’s first year of operation.

Individual members of both staffs also received individual state awards from the ILPC.  AMCHS staff competed in the 5A-Division I category, while CSHS staff competed in the 3A category.

Other members of the Roar staff include Channing Young, sports editor; Rojas Oliva, entertainment editor; Tiffany Hammond, Stephanie Palazzolo, and Aaron Ross, assistant editors; and Austin Coats, Alex Coopersmith and Zach Kluver, staff reporters. The Roar is advised by Mike Williams and assistant advisor Chauncey Lindner.


Other members of The Catamount newspaper staff include Brianna Aguilar, assistant editor; Zoe De Beurs and Alex Miller, staff reporters; and David Rambo, cartoonist. The newspaper is advised by Courtney Wellmann and assistant advisor Teresa Laffin.


The ILPC is an affiliate of the University Interscholastic League, and is one of the nation’s largest state high school associations of student newspapers and yearbooks.The awards were presented during the 87th annual ILPC state convention, April 25-27 at the University of Texas at Austin.
