December CSISD Board Workshop/Meeting Recap

COLLEGE STATION , Texas – The College Station ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday, December 16.  The following discussions and actions are of note.


CSISD Enrollment Growth:  After months of reviewing enrollment, current building capacity, and financial data, the board discussed the timeline for the next potential bond election.

The past 10 years, CSISD has experienced an enrollment growth average of 3.5%.  However, CSISD grew by 6% in 2013-14 and is currently up 6.5% for the 2014-15 school year.  As of now, CSISD has added approximately 1,350 new students the last two years.

The board has until August 2015 to order a bond election for November 2015 should they choose.  In the mean time, CSISD will form a long-range planning committee composed of staff, parents and community members to examine the needs of the district.  It is likely the next bond election, whether it be called for November 2015 or November 2016, will include funding for a 10th elementary school, a third intermediate school, and a third middle school.


2015-16 School Calendar:  In a unanimous vote, the board adopted the school calendar for the 2015-16 school year.   The Districtwide Educational Improvement Council recommended the calendar to the board after getting feedback from peers and reviewing online feedback and voting.

The calendar is similar to the current calendar with finals before the winter break, three days off at Thanksgiving, and two full weeks off at the winter break.

New high school courses for 2015-16:  The board approved 12 new high school courses for the 2015-16 school year.  The consideration of new courses at the high school level is the result of input focused on meeting student needs and interests.

The following courses were approved for 2015-16:

  • Algebraic Reasoning:  Students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics previously presented in middle school math and Algebra I.

  • Data Analysis:  Students will broaden their knowledge of variability and statistical processes.

  • Astronomy:  Comprehensive study of astronomical topics.

  • Special Topics in Language and Culture:  This course will focus on the cultural, historical, geographical and linguistic aspects of various regions of the world.

  • Mandarin Chinese I:  This online course will provide and introduction to the Mandarin Chinese language.

  • Mandarin Chinese II:  This online course will continue to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Mandarin Chinese language.

  • Art Sculpture II and III:  Students will apply the elements and principles of design to traditional and non-traditional construction methods while being exposed to various sculptural media.

  • Dance Composition I, II, and III:  This course is a practical exploration of a variety of processes and elements that may be used in the study of creating dances.

  • Video Game Design:  Students will be challenged to create a number of computer and mobile-based applications as they learn concepts such as story-boarding, programming, event scripting, visual and audio design, level design and troubleshooting.

No Child Left Behind Highly-Qualified Report:  The No Child Left Behind Act requires that all teachers of core content areas be highly-qualified and that the district publicly report the findings.  In College station ISD, 100% of core subject area teachers are highly-qualified.
