Seven students from A&M Consolidated and College Station High Schools recently earned a trip to the state Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) contest.

The students qualified at the Region 4 meet in Galveston and will now compete at the state conference and contest in Dallas in April.

Students worked for months preparing projects in various family and consumer sciences subjects.

AMCHS students Jackson Bobbitt and Keeley Loyd received first place in the Event Management category.  The pair prepared and hosted a community event called “The BCS Children’s Reading Fest.”  They had to plan a budget, find a venue and recruit volunteers to execute the event.. On Saturday, January 11, children and their parents attended this free family event at the AMCHS library where volunteers read books and guided participants in creating crafts related to the stories.

Sophia Amstalden (CSHS) placed third in fashion design with her fashion line that focuses on eco-friendly efforts.

In the entrepreneurship category, Hadeel Balawai (CSHS) placed third by designing a mental health facility targeted towards teens in the local area.

CSHS students Gracie Ward and Savannah Matthews placed third in the food innovations category by developing a vegan-friendly chicken nugget along with a sales plan and presentation for their product.

Finally, Grace Garrison-Tate (CSHS) earned third place in the early childhood education category by using her previous experience to develop an impromptu lesson plan based on a case study provided during the event.
