What Is the Standard Response Protocol (SRP)?

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is our district’s consistent way of keeping students and staff safe during emergencies or unexpected situations that could affect the school day. It gives students, teachers, staff, first responders, and parents the same language and steps to follow to stay safe and act quickly.

How SRP Works

SRP organizes safety responses into five clearly defined actions, each with simple instructions. These are not tied to specific scenarios but instead focus on what we need to do in a moment of urgency.

  • Hold: Stay where you are or in your area. Hallways are kept clear.
  • Secure: Get inside, and lock outside doors. We secure the building to keep everyone safe inside.
  • Lockdown: Locks, lights, and out of sight. Students and staff stay in secured rooms quietly until further notice.
  • Evacuate: Move to a designated location, either within the school or off campus, depending on the situation.
  • Shelter: Protect yourself from a specific hazard by following designated safety steps (e.g., severe weather).

These actions are practiced regularly so students and staff know what to do in any situation.

Why SRP Is Important

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) uses the same words and steps for everyone, reducing confusion and helping people understand what’s happening quickly. It’s action‑based, focusing on the steps that keep students and staff safe rather than trying to anticipate every possible scenario. SRP is also predictable and practiced regularly, so students and staff become familiar with the actions and remain calm and confident during real events.

Communication With Families

If SRP actions are used during a real event, the district will send official updates and instructions through our normal communication channels. During an emergency, please watch for those messages and follow the guidance provided.

For most events, families hear from us after the situation is resolved — especially when there’s no ongoing impact to students.

How You Can Help

Parents and guardians can support school safety by:

  • Keeping your contact information up to date.
  • Relying on official school notifications during an incident.
  • Avoiding coming to campus unless directed. This helps responders and staff focus on student safety.

SRP Resources

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) was developed by the I Love U Guys® Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping schools create simple, consistent, and effective emergency response plans.
