COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The College Station ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday, May 19.  The following discussions and actions are of note.

MEETING

2020-2021 school calendar adjustment discussion:  Superintendent Mike Martindale gave a report to the board regarding the Commissioner of Education’s recent release of an alternate (and optional) school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year.

The commissioner laid out optional examples for district’s to consider which would significantly extend the school year by starting at the beginning of August and ending at the end of June, with longer breaks throughout the year.

Because of the lengthy process in place to develop the calendar each year and receive feedback from the community, CSISD will not be suuggesting sweeping changes to next year’s academic calendar.  However, the district may look into converting some staff development days into instructional days for students after receiving feedback.

Approval of administrators:  The CSISD Board of Trustees approved the hire of Chief Financial Officer Amy Drozd, Director of Career and Technical Education Kevin Ross, and Director of Assessment and Accountability Cheri Hendrick.

Employee safety and reopening discussion:  Chief Administrative office Molley Perry gave an update to the board regarding CSISD’s plan to safely open campus front offices and the central office building for employees and visitors beginning June 1.  A date and scale of return for students is still being determined.

While protocols for employees and visitors are not yet finalized, they are being developed using Governor Abbott’s Executive Orders, along with guidance from the Centers of Disease Control, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Texas Education Agency.

The protocols include provisions for facility cleaning, sanitation stations, signage, employee information for healthy hygiene practices, self-screening for employees, social-distancing expectations and capacity considerations, among others.

Discussion regarding 2020-2021 budget development process:  Superintendent Mike Martindale made a second presentation regarding the development of the 2020-2021 budget.

The board reviewed a draft of revenue and expenditure numbers.  These current numbers, based on the current school finance system, reflect an overall deficit budget of approximately $2.961 million.

CSISD will continue to review staffing and budget requests, monitor and adjust revenue projections, and update expenditure projections over the next three months.

The 2020-2021 budget and tax rate will be adopted at the August board meeting.
